The term information broker is a bit deceiving. A broker, typically, sells something. An information broker, however, does not sell information. An information broker provides the skills to research retrieve and find the information.

An alert service provides information regarding keywords or names to a client on a daily or weekly basis. Subject matter can be anythingbut is usually business related. An example would be: client needs daily monitoring of a competitor.
An Abstracting Service provides a summary of information to a client. Most offen works with an alert service. An example would be: information from 1,000 databases is condensed and provided to a client.
